AGWA Course 5: Culvert Resize Workflow

Learn to evaluate the downstream effects of culvert sizing on watershed discharge using the AGWA Culvert Resize Workflow.

Enrollment in this course is by invitation only

What This Course Covers

This course walks through the AGWA Culvert Resize Workflow from start to finish. You will learn how to place culvert locations, delineate upstream drainage areas, enter elevation–storage and elevation–discharge curves, route flows through the culvert structure, and compare downstream hydrographs for existing and alternative culvert sizes across multiple design storm scenarios.

Course Sections

1

Workflow Overview

Understand what the Culvert Resize Workflow does, when to use it, common use cases, and how culvert sizing affects downstream peak flows for different storm sizes.

2

Assumptions & Limitations

Learn the boundaries of the workflow, including why it is not appropriate for bridge hydraulics, how to handle multiple crossings in series, and when results require PE review.

3

Prerequisites

Understand the access, knowledge, and data required before starting — including how to prepare elevation–storage and elevation–discharge curves in HEC-RAS or HY-8.

4

Procedure

Step-by-step text walkthrough of all 11 workflow steps, from logging in and creating the workflow through defining culvert locations, delineating upstream areas, entering hydraulic curves, placing evaluation points, and routing flows.

5

Output & Reporting

Review routed hydrographs, peak flows, and time series results across all culvert options and design storm scenarios. Export results and understand what to include in a project report.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Place culvert location points and select design storm scenarios in AGWA
  • Delineate and refine upstream drainage areas for culvert locations
  • Enter elevation–storage and elevation–discharge curves for existing and alternative culverts
  • Place evaluation points and run the Route Flows computation
  • Interpret and export routed hydrograph, peak flow, and time series results
